Other Attractions

The Chateau de Chambord is the largest castle in Les Pays de la Loire. François I was instructed to build the castle in 1519. The work on it was disrupted by the Italian War in 1521. François I died in 1547 with the walls of the castle hardly built and the cost of the work being 444,070 livres, or $569,000. The castle was given, passed down, sold, shared, and abandoned throughout the years. It was used as a hunting lodge and a place to get away for a little while. The castle was not finished until 1685 by Louis XIV. The state bought the building for about $14,095,000 (11 million francs) in 1932.

Before WWII, the artworks from the Louvre and Compiègne were stored in the Chateau de Chambord. The artworks included the Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo.

Louis XIV's Bedroom

Out of 440 rooms, this bedroom is one of the few furnished rooms in the entire castle.

Earthenware Stove

Double Helix Staircase

The double helix staircase is rumored to be designed and constructed by Leonardo Da Vinci. Two people can go up and/or down at the same time and never cross each other.
